Risk of Flooding – Immediate Actions to be Taken

If a Flood Alert has been issued:

1. Tune into the local radio and listen for updates on the emergency and for weather and flooding advice. Follow any emergency services advice issued.

2. Contact members of the Flood Action Group (FAG) and organise the checking of the grills to the various culvert outlets. Clear if necessary/possible but DO NOT TAKE ANY RISKS AND IF CLEARING GRILLES THERE MUST BE 2 OF YOU PRESENT IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES

3. Continue monitoring the water level until the risk of flooding recedes.

If you have received a Flood Warning:

1. Implement actions 1 and 2 above.

2. Ensure that key holders of the Village Hall and Church are warned to prepare to offer shelter to residents should there be a need to evacuate their homes.

3. Wherever possible, advise residents to:

Put any flood protection products they have into place

Have torches with fresh or fully charged batteries and candles ready for use

Move cars to higher ground

Make sure any valuable or sentimental items and important documents are safe

Empty furniture drawers and cupboards. Place the contents and any furniture you can upstairs. Fasten plastic bags round the legs of wooden furniture to help minimise absorption of water

Be prepared to turn off mains gas and electricity

Be prepared to evacuate if necessary

Prepare a “Grab to Go bag”

Check on elderly/disabled neighbours

4. If flooding becomes inevitable and there is a risk to life and limb call 999. Also call the Fire and Rescue Service, the Environment Agency Floodline and ERYC.
